Happy New Year!

The title (that you can't see, for whatever reason, so I wrote it again at the top of the message) says it all.  Happy New year to everyone in the |FAST| clan and all our friends, neighbors, and sometimes opponents in the UT community.  May you all have a prosperous and productive year ahead.

Good news for all the freetards out there:  AMD has released the code that will allow open-source 3D drivers to be written for their R600/700 line of cards.  What this basically means is that if you're running Linux (maybe even BSD?) and have an ATI Radeon 48xx card, you may soon be able to game with the big boys with full 3D acceleration.

This is a huge happening in the FOSS world as before this you had the choice of NVIDIA binary blobs (worked very well) or ATI's binary (crap), or the then current open-source drivers (worse than crap).  Right now the code is still developer quality (useless to end-users) but with some decent folks hitting the code, there may be something put out "soon" (soon, in the linux universe sense of the word "soon").

Ars has posted an interesting article dealing with the problems of resurrecting old games.  Granted, the article is really about some old platformers and some older RTS's, but being as we're a UT99 clan, it sort of hits close to home.  Some of the problems are complex, like interfaces that were normal 10-15 years ago but are unexpected and unintuitive today.  Some are "simpler" like graphics updates.

We've probably all heard the gripes along the lines of "if they'd just update '99" (I'm a stong proponent, to an extent).  But would it still be the same game?  I think it would if they would ONLY update the rendering engine and fix the sometimes bipolar editor.  I want 32-bit textures as much as anyone.

Since it's a (almost) New Year, let's get the site rolling with some actual, changing content on the front page.  So, in this vein...

ZDNet has a short review/preview up of the Windows 7 beta on one of their blog pages.  They seem impressed with the build and note that it seems to be quality work.  He also makes a wild guess regarding the release date, but I didn't note anything that might actually back up his claims.

Personally, I skipped Vista.  I tried the second Vista beta but saw nothing compelling feature-wise that made me want to upgrade to it (especially the price and the 237 different versions of it (Windows Vista Trailer with Indoor Plumbing and Electricity Version!)).  I realize that the beta was, well, a beta, but it really didn't perform well for me.  Others I have talked with who have bought new systems (not one person upgraded an existing system) seemed rather "whelmed with the whole thing.

Make sure you check the page for the link to the full screenshot gallery and the link to the (slightly) better review/preview.

Speaking of screens, check the new taskbar out.  It's seems a bit thick for my taste and 1280x1024 4:3 resolution.  I understand it's supposed to have a near OSX dock functioality, but I wonder if you can change it's size at all?
